Providing Hope for Cancer

Each year, Millard West and Millard South hold the Hoops for Hope event. At this basketball, students are able to donate money to the American Cancer Society. Despite being competitive against each other, West and South come together for a great cause. This broadcast won a Best of SNO award.

Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk

Omaha holds an annual walk for Down Syndrome where individuals with Down Syndrome can form teams to walk with them around Stinson Park in Aksarben. Going to this event was so much fun and it was great to see so many people stepping up for Down Syndrome.

Hall of Fame Induction

My senior year was the 25th anniversary of Millard West. It was also the tear of the first Hall of Fame induction. At the first football game, 9 individuals were inducted along with the 2001 Football team.

Rally for the Planet

Students for Sustainability, a club on high schools around Omaha fighting for the environment, held a rally on the Dodge Street Bridge. At the time, a junior at Millard West was a part of the foundation of this group and helped construct this rally.

FEATURE

48 States for Autism Awareness

Over the summer of 2019, incoming sophomore Adam Straub and his father Mike Straub traveled around the continental United States to raise money and awareness for Autism. Although this is one of my favorite broadcasts, my partner Edison Geiler and I experienced some troubles with the microphones and had to redo the interview with Adam and his father. In the end, it was worth it because it is a great story and it won a Best of SNO award.

Camille O'Neill

This award-winning feature is my favorite story I have ever done. Freshman Camille O’Neill shares her story and her bright insight to life.

ENTERTAINMENT

Hungry for Hunger Block

This was my first food review. 2018-2019 Editor-in-Chief and I went to the Hunger Block to see what it was all about. This broadcast even features our on-camera reviews. This was such a fun broadcast to make. This broadcast was made before we had microphones so the interviews are somewhat hard to hear.

MWHS WILDCAT NEWS

ANCHORING

8.29.19

This was the first broadcast of the 2019-2020 year. Although I had practice anchoring the last broadcast of the 2018-2019 year, it was still a little nerve-wracking as my co-anchor Edison and I would now be the face of the MWHS Wildcat News. When it was nice, we would anchor outside. Being outside was nice, but sometimes our microphones would pick up the sound of the wind.

10.11.19

Going into the colder months, Edison and I decided we needed to find a new place to anchor that isn’t outside. Seeing as Millard West does not have a studio, this task has proved to be difficult. Here we were filmed outside the auditorium. We also wanted to be seated to provide a more professional feel.

Script

After a few segments of sitting outside the auditorium, we decided to move to the green screen room. This has been where we have filmed anchoring since. This was the first time Edison and I used our new teleprompter. This device has helped us film anchoring in a more timely manner and takes the edge off of needing to memorize our lines.

This is what our script looks like. Edison and I like to switch off who says what so it adds variety. Although we have aa teleprompter now, we still like to be able to have a printed script as it helps show who will be saying what.
