Writing

Being a student-journalist has given me the perfect outlet to express myself through writing. I have learned about many of my peers while also sharing their stories. I am able to find out the facts of events to share it with the school. I’m also able to write my opinion for the rest of the study body to hear. Here are some of my favorite pieces of writing that I have done throughout my student-journalism career.

Taking on the Capitol

NEWS

While as a student-journalist it is important to cover those in our school and community, it is also important to acknowledge the journalism department. I did a writeup on our trip to Washington DC for the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention. We had many attendees win national awards.

Fateful Fabrics

OPINION

With the rise of awareness in climate change, more people try to become more aware of their carbon footprint. I wrote Fateful Fabrics to bring awareness to my peers about how the fashion industry is affecting the earth for the worse.

CollegeBoard modifies Advanced Placement Policies

NEWS

This story is about the modifications CollegeBoard made to AP courses. This topic interested me as I was unaware of the change being made to some of my classes. I figured the best way to find out would be by doing a story over these changes. This story also won Best of Sno.

A whole note of talents

FEATURE

I received word about a student who was not only very musically involved, but also extremely smart as well. I wanted to capture how he balanced practicing all of his instruments with his rigorous schoolwork.

Vaccination Nation

OPINION

In 2019, I started to become more aware of the controversy of vaccinations. The idea of not vaccinating children and jeopardizing them along with the community sounded crazy to me. I wanted to research this topic so I could write an opinion article to educate my peers as well.

Women Making History

NEWS

During the month of March, Justice and Diversity League sets up a display to honor women who have made history. This was the same month that Omaha held its women’s march so I wanted to incorporate that into my story, while also acknowledging the work Justice and Diversity League went through.

Getting Ahead (Scarf) in the World of Business

FEATURE

For volume II issue III of our newspaper, we wanted to do an in-depth about student businesses. I chose to write about a senior who was very nifty with a sewing machine. She specialized in making headscarves but also started to make other accessories for hair.

Helping Bands

NEWS

As a member of Key Club, I love to report on our projects to bring awareness to the student body. My junior year, we sold bracelets made by students in Central America. All the money made from sales went back to the community to put these students through school.

September is suicide awareness month and I wanted to bring light to the issue of mental health, especially in high school. I interviewed the school’s social worker along with a counselor. This story went into the paper which was my goal so more people would be able to read about the importance of putting an end to the stigma behind mental health and suicide.

If You’re Wondering about Wonder

Entertainment

Of the few reviews I have written, this one is my favorite. I wrote a review about the movie Wonder. To make this review connect to the student body, I connected the #BeKind movement into the review.

Dodging Balls for a Cause

NEWS

My sophomore year, Key Club put on a dodgeball tournament. Being that I was an officer in Key Club, I wanted to report on this event. The school was able to come together to raise money for United Way. The Quality Time that raised the most amount of money was entered in a dodgeball tournament where they played for a prize.

Volume I Issue I

This story was my first story published in the newspaper. To make it all the more special, this was the first print copy ever released of the CATalyst newspaper. In the summer of 2017, Millard West renovated the building. Although some changed were minor, such as the fire alarm system, others were noticeable as soon as anyone walked in, like the mezzanine. I took a leap of faith and decided to take on this story. This story went through many edits as I was trying to get the hang of what news writing is all about. Regardless, it was on the front of the newspaper which made all the time and effort put into this story worth it.
