Walking into Millard West on the first day of school, I had no idea how the next four years would look for me. Upon reflecting on my many high school experiences, I can honestly say that I am proud of my accomplishments, which couldn’t have been done if I didn’t enroll in Advanced Journalism my sophomore year

Journalism has opened so many outlets for me. I got to meet so many people, hear the most incredible sources and go to many different events for my school and community. Most importantly, it gave me a voice. Journalism has allowed me to find who I am and gave me a purpose all throughout high school. Journalism started to become a part of my identity. I wasn’t always so outspoken and outgoing, but journalism forced me to get out of my comfort zone every day. I had to meet new people and get to know them, which is now one of my favorite parts of being a student-journalist. Looking back on my work from years prior, my growth is extremely prominent. I have become a better writer, videographer and storyteller. All the time, effort and edits put into my work have been worth. I am proud of being a journalist.

Becoming Editor-in-Chief this year has been the most rewarding role I have earned. Whenever I wasn’t too sure about continuing my journalism career in high school, I reminded myself what I was working towards: being the Editor-in-Cheif of the award-winning CATalyst newspaper. And that’s what I am now. I’m only 18-years-old and I don’t know where life will take me in the future. But I am positive that I will always be a journalist. All the skills I have learned will carry me through the entirety of my life and I am so grateful for that.
